The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has warned that the  Sri Lankan government’s proposed law to create a commission to investigate wartime abuses replicates previous failed attempts, ignores the needs of victims, and falls far short of meeting Sri Lanka’s international legal obligations, adding that authorities continue to silence and repress victims and their communities during this process. 

Speaking at a recent Tamil Heritage Month event, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will continue to push for accountability, justice and reconciliation for human rights abuses perpetrated by Sri Lanka. 

Trudeau remarked that Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas in the world and stated that their contributions to the country have been "extradordinary". 

Tamils in Batticaloa and Jaffna remembered the 87 people killed by Sri Lankan security forces in the 1987 Kokkadichcholai massacre. 

Tamil journalists in Batticaloa protested in front of Batticaloa's Gandhi Park today to demand justice for abducted and assassinated journalists and to condemn the government’s continued media repression. 

Marking “Black January”, the protestors said that nearly 40 Tamil journalists had been abducted or disappeared and demanded to know the status of investigations into these cases.

Bhavatharini Raja, a renowned singer and the daughter of legendary music composer Ilayaraja, passed away on January 25, succumbing to a battle with cancer. The 47-year-old singer had been undergoing treatment in Colombo.
