Jaffna MP Archchuna Ramanathan highlighted the racist double standards in how Tamil and Sinhala leaders are treated and condemned the ongoing political manipulation of ethnic tensions on the island, in a speech to parliament last week.

Tamil National People’s Front MP, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, has told Sri Lanka's Parliament that he will continue voting against the budget until a fair solution for the Tamil people has been settled.

Queues formed at petrol stations across the island on Friday and over the weekend, after a sudden surge in demand was triggered by the decision of the Fuel Distributors’ Association to halt fuel orders, leading to concerns of a possible fuel shortage. Motorists rushed to filling stations, while stations began to ration the supply. 

Sri Lankan authorities are on the hunt for controversial former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon after a court ordered his arrest in connection with a fatal shooting during a botched police raid. The former police chief, notorious for his alleged human rights violations, disappeared after the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest warrant against him and several other officers.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced plans to downsize the island’s bloated military by 2030, pledging to transform it into a “professional institution” while simultaneously reinforcing its technological and strategic capabilities.
