Afghans call for US security pact this year

An influential group of Afghan elders has called for a security pact with the US to be signed by the end of this year.

The pact, which would allow US troops to remain in the country past 2014, is being delayed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who said he wants the US to bring peace to the country first.

The US has said the delaying of the pact is neither “practical nor possible”.

Congo opposition member arrested on ICC warrant

A senior member of Congo's opposition was arrested on Sunday on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant, accusing him of interfering with the war crimes trial of the former presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba.

The arrest of Fidèle Babala Wandu is part of a wider effort to bring Bemba's associates, based in countries across Europe, to account for trying to influence witnesses in his case, said the ICC in a statement.

Turkish Ambassador to Egypt expelled for Morsi remarks

The Turkish Ambassador in Cairo has been expelled after Turkey’s Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for overthrown president Mohammad Morsi to be released from detention.

Egypt’s foreign ministry accused Turkey of interfering in its internal affairs, with spokesperson Badr Abdelatty saying that Turkey was "attempting to influence public opinion against Egyptian interests, supported meetings of organisations that seek to create instability in the country".

CAR rejects genocide warning

The Central African Republic's foreign minister has rejected international warnings that the country could be headed for genocide.

According to AFP, foreign minister Leonie Banga Bothy told local radio on Saturday:
"We can't speak of a genocide of an ethnic or social group,"

US increases funding to peacekeeping forces amidst fears of genocide in CAR

The United States, this week, called for deeper international involvement to halt the violence in Central African Republic, amid growing concerns of an imminent genocide.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry, unveiled $40 million in new funding, to aid the African Union- led peacekeeping mission known as MISCA.

UN security council is too late to act on Syria'- Deputy Secretary-General

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jan Eliasson, told Turkish press Friday, that the UN Security Council was late to act on the conflict situation in Syria.

CAR 'on the verge of genocide' says France

The French Foreign Minister has warned that the Central Africa Republic is on "the verge of genocide", as he sought UN permission for French and African Union forces to intervene militarily in the country.

Speaking on French television station France 2, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said,
"It's total disorder... The country is on the verge of genocide”.

British soldiers who shot Irish civilians must be prosecuted – former minister

The former deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, Seamus Mallon, has said that anyone involved in shooting unarmed civilians during the Troubles must be prosecuted.

"Prosecutions are very difficult after a period of time," he said on Radio 4.

"That's no reason for not bringing them.

11 Egyptian soldiers killed in car bomb attack

A car bomb in north Sinai killed 11 Egyptian soldiers and injured 34 others on Wednesday,  as unrest continue in the region.

Instability in the Sinai peninsula has grown with the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak, with the Egyptian army launching a recent offensive in the region. More than 20,000 troops were deployed in September as the army attempted to regain control of the area.

Some 100 members of the Egyptian security forces have been killed in a spate of bombings in recent months, with the latest being labelled an act of "black terrorism".

German prosecutor calls for Nazi-era war crimes charges against 94-year-old American

A German prosecutor has called for charges against a 94-year-old man, accused of Nazi-era war crimes, who emigrated to the USA in the late 1940s.

According to Thomas Will, deputy head of the central office investigating Nazi crimes, Ukrainian-born Michael Karkoc is accused of leading killings in the village of Chlaniow in 1944, killing around 40 civilians.

Will stated,
"I came to the conclusion that he was in charge during a crime in Chlaniow... The charge would be about 40 counts of murder."
