Sri Lankan Government give bug-infested rice to Tamil mothers in Mannar

Mothers in the Mannar district have filed a complaint with the Mannar Public Health Medical Office after being supplied inedible bug-infested rice under the “Uthama Pooja for Pregnant Mothers” program by the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs.

The provisions provided by the ministry amounts to a package under 2000 Rs and which includes 6kg of rice, 1/2 kg of lentils, 1.2 kg of peanuts and a tin of fish. The rice provided to the Tamil pregnant mothers were inedible, riddled with bugs and were found to be stored in an unhygienic manner at the Mannar Co-operative Society.

The Mannar Public Health Medical Office has now lodged a complaint against the Mannar Co-operative Society. Rice from this warehouse is now banned and cannot be distributed to anyone following a health inspector's visit to the warehouse.
