Security measures have been tightened across the North East since Thursday, following the arrest of 'six prominent former LTTE cadres on charges of planning to assassinate a prominent Tamil politician in the North,' according to Daily Mirror.
Military intelligence and Terrorist Investigations Department raided a safe house, in a joint operation in the North East last week, after they had already arrested a German citizen for supposedly being a former LTTE cadre plotting to revive the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Furthermore, the suspects have allegedly been equipped with "special training on the use of high explosives as well” and given financial support by former leaders in Malaysia and India. Daily Mirror reporter Sunil Jayasiri claimed yesterday that "Sri Lanka enforcement authorities will seek the assistance of foreign intelligence agencies to unearth the latest terrorist network" and “as a precautionary measure we have strengthened security especially in the North and East following the latest development.”
The heavy security measures adds to the escalating militarisation and surveillance seen across the North East after the Sri Lankan military set up checkpoints in Mullaitivu and Vavuniya earlier this week. The intensified militarisation has already enabled a wave of relentless search operations on locals.
