Tamil asylum seeker murdered by Canadian ‘serial killer’

A Tamil asylum seeker who fled Sri Lanka to seek safety in Canada has been found killed, reportedly murdered by an alleged serial killer in Toronto.

Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam arrived in Canada in 2010, one of 492 Tamils aboard the MV Sun Sea, a dilapidated vessel that docked into British Columbia.

Canadian police announced that Mr Kanagaratnam was probably killed by accused serial killer Bruce McArthur sometime between early September and mid December 2015.

Yet the 37 year old was never reported missing. Police said an  undisclosed international agency ultimately helped identify him from his remains.

Gabriel Chand, a Vancouver-based lawyer who worked with Mr Kanagaratnam, acknowledged that he had been struggling with his immigration status. Just  64 per cent of asylum seekers aboard MV Sun Sea were have been accepted into Canada.

"Had he won, he probably would have been around friends," said Mr Chand. "No one reported him missing. What a lonely way to go."

Dinsan Vanniyasingam, a friend and fellow asylum seeker aboard the MV Sun Sea passenger, said he was shocked by the death.

"We came to Canada, we were so happy because we were in a safe place ,” he said. “Why this have to happen again and again?"
