Japan apologises for war-time rape and abuse of South Korean women

Japan has apologised for the rape and forced prostitution of South Korean women during World War 2 in a new bi-lateral accord that seeks to boost relations between the two nations.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that Japan had apologised and expressed remorse reports Reuters.

The Japanese prime minister said,

“We should never allow this problem to drag on into the next generation. From now on, Japan and South Korea will enter a new era.”

The White House national security adviser, Susan Rice welcomed the accord, adding,

“The comprehensive resolution is an important gesture of healing and reconciliation.”

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the agreement, and said in a statement that it would “ contribute to improving the bilateral relationship between the two countries.”

Of the 238 women in South Korea that came forward to document their abuse, 46 remain alive. Japan’s government pledged $8.2 million to aid the women affected by Japan's actions during World War 2.
