British Tamil sports festival returns

British Tamil sports teams competed at the 20th annual sports festival on May 29 for trophies in football, volleyball and netball. The event was hosted by the British Tamil Sports League (BTSL), which took it over from the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO). The BTSL , formed in 2004 to manage leagues for Tamil Diaspora football tournaments, now also conducts those for volleyball and netball. TYO-Canada remembers Sivakumar

The Tamil Youth Organization (TYO-Canada) organized sports and cultural events on June 11 and 12 in honour of Pon. Sivakumar, a Jaffna Tamil student activist in the early seventies who committed suicide on June 5 1974 to escape torture in police custody. Rain that drenched Tamil youth activists conducting a major leafleting effort in support of the ‘Boycott Sri Lankan Cricket’ campaign on Saturday, the third day of Sri Lanka’s first test match against England, proved a blessing in disguise when it stopped play till lunch, allowing them to canvass crowds of spectators milling outside the Swalec Stadium in Wales. As part of the activities marking Tamil Genocide Remembrance Month, Tamil youths in Canada organised a tree planting event in Downsview Park, Toronto, on Sunday May 22. St. Georges bake sale raises abuse awareness

Two student societies at St. Georges Medical School of the University of London - the International Tamil Society (ITS) and Amnesty International (AI) - cohosted a bake sale on Monday May 23 to raise awareness of war crimes and rights abuses in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, and to raise funds for a children's charity and rights advocacy campaigns.
