Sri Lanka is reportedly at risk of losing its favourable trading preferences granted by the Generalised Scheme of Preference Plus (GSP+) agreement, for failing to repeal the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Sri Lanka’s unprecedented economic crisis has hit the health sector hard, forcing the country to delay non-urgent surgeries.

Tamil journalists in Batticaloa held a rally yesterday to demand justice for journalists who have been killed by the Sri Lankan state. 

At the rally, a letter was handed to MP G Karunakaran to present to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, which calls for an international investigation into the murders and disappearances of Tamil journalists.

Sri Lankan officials will attend a virtual meeting of a new sovereign debt roundtable led by the IMF, World Bank and India. 

Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, director of the IMF's Strategy, Policy and Review Department, told reporters that the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable does not intend to discuss country-specific debt restructuring issues, but to address some of the broader impediments that have been delaying such relief, Reuters reports.

Ahead of a planned speaking engagement hosted by the London School of Economics (LSE) and featuring Sri Lanka’s former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, LSE’s student Tamil society spoke with Tamil Guardian to express their disappointment over the event.

Mannar's Women Development Federation organised a march in support of 'One Billion Rising', the biggest mass action to end violence against women. 

Women across the district participated in the march which made its way through Mannar and ended in front of the Mannar district Secretariat. During the procession, drums were played and members sang songs promoting women's rights. More than 100 women participated in the march, a mural was also painted to mark the event.
