In an unprecedented move, Sri Lankan authorities sold 135 boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishermen to the highest bidder in an auction that took place earlier today in Jaffna. 

The sale yielded more than five million Sri Lankan rupees to the authorities with 1.6 million paid on the spot. The winner of the auction is supposed to pay the remainder in instalments. 

Sri Lanka’s Special Task Force (STF) have shot and injured at least two men in Jaffna last night.

The shooting took place in Thenmaradchi, at approximately 19:30 on Sunday evening.

The injured have been admitted to Chavakachcheri Base Hospital.

Sri Lanka’s ‘Independence Day’ parade has drawn attention after it emerged that a military float carrying ‘War Heroes of Sri Lanka’ was adorned with a photograph of LTTE fighters.

The float, which was carrying seated fighters from the Sri Lankan military, was given a prominent place in the parade, reportedly carrying “War Heroes”.

It has since emerged that the second photograph on the float, seen in the photograph above, is of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) commandos on the battlefield.

Batticaloa police served Tamil journalist Punniyamoorthy Sasikaran with a restraining order yesterday, to ban him from covering a protest that the police claimed was planned against Sri Lanka's independence celebrations.

The Global Tamil Diaspora, representing over one million Tamils who fled Sri Lanka, launched a campaign today to publicly ban 18 credibly alleged war criminals in Sri Lanka. The campaign marks Sri Lanka's Independence Day, or as the groups call it, "a day of mourning" but one "with hope and optimism for the Tamil people from Sri Lanka."
