Tamil villagers in Mannar beaten by drunken Navy officer

A Tamil villager in the village of Vankalaipattu, Mannar, were severely beaten by a drunken Sri Lankan Navy offical at midnight after being intercepted at midnight as he was travelling home from visiting the sea.

The following day a village officer (Grama Niladhari), who had witnessed the assault, went to ask the navy why this attack had taken place only to be assaulted by ten navy officials. The navy refused to accept their complaint leaving them to file their complaint with the police station.

Thileepan commemorated in Tamil homeland despite Sri Lankan crackdown

Despite crackdowns by the Sri Lankan state across the Tamil homeland, several Tamil politicians and civil society members held private memorials for Lt Col Thileepan on Sunday, the 34th anniversary of his passing following his twelve day fast-unto-death.

Students at the University of Jaffna defied threats and held a vigil at an undisclosed location on campus.

British Labour party pushes for Sri Lanka to be referred to the International Criminal Court

Speaking at the event hosted by Tamils for Labour, during the British Labour Party's annual conference, Shadow Foreign Secretary, Lisa Nandy, maintained that the party has been pushing for "concrete steps" on Sri Lanka, such as a referral to the International Criminal Court.

"We pushed in March for the UN resolution to include concrete measures, such as an International Independent Investigative Mechanism (III-M) and for a referral of cases to the international criminal court. These concerete steps are really important to us" she told the conference.

She further maintained that "human rights, the rule of law, freedom and democracy, will always be an essential component of Labour’s foreign policy". She also added that "if you threaten human rights anywhere you threaten human rights everywhere".

Palermo City, Italy recognises the genocide of Eelam Tamils

The Palermo City council has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Italian- Tamil community recognising the "Genocide of Eelam Tamils perpetrated by the Sri Lankan state". 

Remembering Thileepan's sacrifice 34 years on

Today marks 34 years since the death of Lt Col Thileepan, a political wing leader of the LTTE who fasted to death, in a protest appealing to the Indian government to honour pledges made to the Tamil people.

Thileepan began his fast on the September 15, 1987, with 100,000 people gathered around the historic Nallur Kandwaswamy Temple in Jaffna.

On September 13, 1987, Thileepan put forward five demands  to the Indian government following the signing of the Indo-Lanka accord in July 1987: 

Mullaitivu Court imposes ban on Thileepan commemoration

Following a police injunction, the Mullaitivu court has imposed a ban on the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of Lt.Col Thileepan’s sacrifice.

This move comes only a few days after the Jaffna court issued a ban order in response to a similar police injunction. 

The ban order specifically mentioned former Northern Provincial Council member Thurairasa Ravikaran, among other persons. 

Australian Tamil Congress express 'deep concern for the safety of Tamils in Sri Lanka'

Responding to the arrest of  Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) General Secretary and MP, Selvarasa Kajendran, the Australian Tamil Congress (ATC) have expressed their "deep concern for the safety of Tamils" and urged the foreign secretary to raise a "strong objection to the ongoing political suppression of the Tamil people under the pretext of COVID-19 regulations".

British MP for Ilford South and Shadow Transport Minister, Sam Tarry, has slammed "the harassment and arbitrary arrest" of Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) General Secretary and MP, Selvarasa Kajendran, who was arrested for commemorating the death of Lt Col Thileepan.
On twitter Tarry maintained that the arrest and harassment of Kajendran illustrated "the need for international accountability for mass atrocities and a political solution that respects the right to self determination of Tamil people".

Responding to the arrest of Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) parliamentarian, Selvarasa Kajendran,  for commemorating the death of Lt Col Thileepan; C.V Wigneswran, leader of the Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kootan (TMTK), condemned the police's actions and maintained the right of Tamils to remember their dead and to pursue self-determination.
