Mullaitivu police threatened to shoot Tamils after tearing down red and yellow flags hoisted for Maaveeral Naal commemorations. 

Flowers scattered at Nandikadal lagoon to mark Maaveerar Naal

Flowers were scattered at Nandikadal lagoon at sunrise today by Former Northern Provincial Councillor T. Ravikaran to mark Maaveerar Naal. 

"Nandikadal, which has been a silent witness to the atrocities subjected to the Tamil people, contains the tears and blood of our relatives," Ravikaran said.

Relatives of fallen LTTE cadres and residents finished clearing Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam in Kilinochchi today. 

They collected broken gravestones to form a makeshift monument ahead of tomorrow's Maaveerar Naal remembrance event. 

Day six of Maaveerar remembrance week observed in Nallur

The sixth day of 'Maaveerar vaaram', the week of remembrance preceding Maaveerar Naal, was observed in Nallur today. 

Relatives of fallen fighters and locals lit lamps in front of the 34 plaques that were erected earlier this week at a memorial hall in Nallur. The plaques list the names of tens of thousands of Tamil fighters who lost their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation. 

Parents of fallen fighters honoured ahead of Maaveerar Naal

The parents of fallen LTTE fighters were honoured across the North-East today ahead of Maaveerar Naal.

In the Suppar Madam area of Point Pedro, families of Maaveerar were accompanied by musicians in a procession from the local temple to the community hall, where were flowers laid at the photos of fallen fighters.

Final preparations for Maaveerar Naal underway across Mullaitivu

Final preparations are underway at ten Thuyilum Illams across Mullaitivu although Sri Lankan security forces have stepped up their presence in the region.

Parents and relatives of fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)  cadres are making preparations outside Alankulam Thuyilum Illam in Mullaitivu, as a Sri Lankan army base now stands on top of the cemetery which housed the graves of Tamil fighters. 

Red and yellow flags have been hoisted across the barbed wires of the 65 Infantry Division's base as locals prepare to commemorate their loved ones for Maaveerar Naal. 

 

Traders in Mullaitivu investigated over red and yellow flags on shop fronts

Traders in Mullaitivu are being investigated after decorating their shop fronts with red and yellow flags in the lead up to Maaveerar Naal. 

Sri Lankan intelligence officers have begun inquiries into the shop owners and collecting details about their family members. They also took photographs of the shops with the flags hoisted outside them. This is the latest act of intimidation by the Sri Lankan state which continues to crackdown on Tamil memorialisation.
