Senior British politicians from across the political spectrum have commemorated eleven years since the massacres at Mullivaikkal with messages calling for accountability and genocide recognition, whilst also praising the British Tamil community for their resilience.

A remembrance event for the victims of the Mullivaikkal massacres was held in Trincomalee today.

The Sri Lankan military announced that a brigadier who was found guilty by a British court of threatening Tamil protestors in London is to be promoted to Major General, on the same day that Tamil Genocide Day was being marked worldwide.

Brigadier Priyanka Fernando has been promoted to the rank of Major General, stated the military.

The Mannar Urban Council paid tribute to the victims of the Mullivaikkal massacres on Monday.

Sri Lanka’s prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa pledged not to prosecute Sri Lankan soldiers for war crimes and claimed that “Tamil people are now free to live as they wish” as security forces halted commemorations events in the North-East.

On the 11^th Anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide, Canadian politicians marked the Mullivaikkal genocide with statements. Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, also released a statement, calling for “a meaningful accountability process” and paid tribute to survivors who fled to Canada.

Canadian MPP's, the Brampton and Toronto Mayor's were among those who commemorated Mullivaikkal with the Canadian Tamil community. 

Sri Lankan police halted Ilankai Tamil Arasi Katchi's (ITAK) Mullivaikkal remembrance event at their office in Batticaloa. 

Vavuniya Municipal Council commemorated Mullivaikkal at the Pongu Tamil memorial site while Vavuniya police officers oversaw the event. 

Sri Lankan troops were caught on camera stamping out a flame that had been lit to mark the Mullivakkal massacres in Jaffna this evening.
