China to construct maximum security prison in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government is in talks with the Chinese government to construct a new maximum-security prison.

The State Minister of Prison Management, Lohan Ratwatte, told parliament that the new prison will be equipped with several facilities and that the Welikada prison will be relocated to this location.

Sri Lankan lawmakers drink 'COVID-19 cure tonic' as thousands break regulations in Kegalle

Thousands gathered in Kegalle outside an Ayurvedic centre earlier this month, disregarding COVID-19 regulations, to collect samples of an unapproved tonic that claims to “cure” the virus after several Sri Lankan parliamentarians publicly consumed and endorsed the tonic. 

The tonic, which reportedly contains honey and nutmeg is made by Dhammika Bandara,who is neither a medical professional or registered Ayurvedic practitioner. 

Sri Lankan prison guards confirmed to have killed 11 people

<p><u><a href="http://www.jdslanka.org/index.php/news-features/human-rights/976-sri-la…">Sri Lanka’s Attorney General</a></u> has confirmed that prison guards opened fire on inmates at Mahara prison, killing 11 people and injuring close to 150, on the 29 November.</p> <p>Prison authorities and parliamentarians had earlier described the incident as a “riot” claiming that inmates turned violent after using psychiatric drugs.</p>
