The chief Buddhist monk of the Asgiriya Chapter said Sri Lanka’s president had agreed there was no need for the island to have a new constitution, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana met with former Sri Lankan Minister and National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa and told him that Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena shared his views on a new constitution.

The Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council called on the United Nations to have closer collaboration with the North-East, but stated that it could not come about “at the expense of being manipulated by the Central Government”.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremeisnghe pledged that his government would bear the costs for the renovation of the golden roof for a Buddhist vihara in Kandy, after meeting with monks during a ceremony held in his honour today.

Sri Lanka’s former foreign minister Ravi Karunayake, who stepped down from the role amidst allegations of corruption, said he had done so to safeguard the president and prime minister, as he met with Buddhist monks in Kandy today.

The Sri Lankan navy has arrested four Tamil Nadu fishermen on Monday for allegedly entering the island's waters. 

The fishermen are from Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu, the Pune Mirror reported. 

This is the latest in a series of arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy which continues to raise tensions in the southern Indian state. 

The fishermen's boat has been taken to Kangesanthurai. 

A no-confidence motion is being drafted against Sri Lanka's Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils, Faizer Mustapha regarding the postponement of the local elections. 

The motion is being led by the UNP MP for Badulla district, Chaminda Wijesiri who informed parliament of the motion on August 9 and commenced the drafting process on Sunday.
