Tamil Family’s home burnt to ashes in Mullaitivu

A Tamil family’s house burned to ashes in a housefire earlier today in the Kaiveli resettlement area in Mullaitivu.

The young family and their infants had been living in the home since 2018.

The family, who are daily-wage labourers, have thus far been able to support themselves without government assistance. However, the house fire has tragically stripped them of their precious belongings, including their money, clothing, food and jewellery.

The resettlement police are investigating the fire.

The Kaiveli villagers have faced several obstacles in their attempts to return to their homes after the war. At first, they were blocked by the Sri Lankan Army, which erected signs prohibiting entry to the lands. When the signs were taken down, the forestry department began laying border stones. This forced many families to live with family members for over eight years after the war.
