Works have commenced in Mullaitivu for the construction of a memorial site for 8 Tamils killed by the Sri Lankan army.
On November 27, 2007, 8 Tamils of which 6 were children, were killed by a claymore mine planted by the Sri Lankan army’s Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LLRP) or Deep Penetration Unit in Iyankan Kulam.
The victims were: N. Nitharsan, aged 13; K. Gowsiga, aged 15; N. Mathikaran, aged 16; N. Pratheepa, aged 16; C. Diroya, aged 16; A. Ajithnath, aged 16; S. Sakunthaladevi, aged 18; and V. Krishnaveni, aged 26.
Applications to construct a memorial for the victims had been repeatedly refused but was finally granted by Thunukkai divisional council on November 15.
