Sudden searches and patrols by Sri Lankan military and police forces left Vavuniya residents alarmed over the weekend.
Military personnel blocked roads in Eechankulam, Pampaimadu and Maharambaikulam and carried out intensive searches of pedestrians and motorists.
The army also engaged in surveillance of the Vavuniya old bus stand, while Special Task Force (STF) troops patrolled the Vavuniya town area on motorcycles.
Residents of Madinanagar and Poonthottam reported that the same weekend soldiers had carried out house-to-house searches.
