Two arrested in connection to murdered Tamil village officer

Local police in Mannar have arrested two persons in relation to the murder of a Tamil village officer at Manthai West Divisional Secretariat.

The husband of the victim’s lady colleague was among the two suspects to be arrested on Sunday by Iluppaikadavai Police.

Last week, colleagues of the murdered officer, 55 year old S.Vijayendran, held a protest in front of the secretariat demanding that the killers be arrested and brought to justice.

Vijayendran, a village officer to the Iluppaikadavai area in Mannar, was killed in a mysterious attack by a group of unidentified persons on Tuesday 3rd November, while on his way home from work.

The murder shocked many due to its brutal and startling nature, but the reasons for the murder still remain unanswered. Vijayendran was described by locals as an advocate against the illegal sand mining in Manthai West Divisional Secretariat Division and police investigations are taking into account that he may have been targeted for speaking out on these issues.
