‘Ensure our safety!’ – Mannar government officials demand justice for murdered colleague

Government employees of the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat in Mannar, staged a protest demanding justice for the murder of one of their colleagues.

55-year-old S.Vijendran a village officer to the Iluppaikadavai area in Mannar, was killed in a mysterious attack by a group of unidentified persons on Tuesday 3rd November while on his way home from work.

Vijendran’s colleagues, including secretaries and fellow village officers, protested outside the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat on Friday and displayed placards urging that the safety of public servants in the North-East was protected.

Placards such as “Who is the killer?”, “Ensure the safety of government servants” and “Justice for Grama Niladhari S.Vijayendran’s murder” were displayed.

Vijendran was described by locals as an advocate against the illegal sand mining in Manthai West Divisional Secretariat Division and police investigations are taking into account that he may have been targeted for speaking out on these issues.
