Tree planting to honour fallen LTTE cadres begins in North

The annual tree planting drive in the Northern Province to honour fallen LTTE cadres was marked with a cultural programme and plant sale and exhibition in Jaffna on Saturday.

The event, organised by the Green Movement, was attended by former chief minister C V Wigneswaran and Tamil Nadu activist Thirumavalavan and attracted large crowds to Jaffna’s Kittu Park (also known as Sankiliyan Park).

The tree planting initiative was started in 2013 by the Northern Provincial Council to commemorate Maaveerar Naal, before the day started being commemorated again on a large scale at LTTE cemeteries (thuyilum illams) in 2016.
