Tamil fisherman dies in Mullaitivu as Cyclone Burevi hits

The body of Jayaseelan Silaksan, a 26 year old resident of Mullaitivu who ventured into the Nanthikadal lagoon to retrieve his boat as cyclone Burevi hit on was recovered on Thursday.

As cyclone Burevi, battered the coastal areas of the Tamil homeland in Eelam and Tamil Nadu, Mullaitivu district experienced torrential rainfall accompanied by intense gusts of wind.

The tempestuous weather pulled into the sea the boat that Jayaseelan had parked on the shores. In an effort to recover that boat, Jayaseelan ventured into the Nanthikadal lagoon along with his brother on Thursday on another watercraft.

Subsequently the craft in which Jayaseelan entered the waters capsized as a result of extreme storm and heavy downpour causing him to drown in the lagoon.

Following the incident, the army, navy and local fishermen attempted to rescue Jayaseelan from the waters. Jayaseelan’s body was recovered and was confirmed to have died later that day. He is survived by his wife and two children.
