Tamil Eelam open CONIFA Women's World Cup

The CONIFA's Women's World Cup has kicked off with the inaugural game between Tamil Eelam and Székely Land. 

Tamil Eelam showed heart to twice come from behind to draw the game 2-2 against Székely Land.

The first half saw Tamil Eelam working both wings to pressure the opposition. Passing the ball well Tamil Eelam were unlucky not to go ahead in the first 35 minutes. Tamil Eelam pressed well as a team, Székely Land could not consolidate play in the first half with Tamil Eelam closing down the centre. However, it was Székely Land to score first with a lofted free kick just before the end of the first half. Defensively Tamil Eelam held well  in open play, Szekely Land had few chances. Though trailing now going into the second half Tamil Eelam had to dig deep.

Tamil Eelam opened the second half strong. Continuing to play their game, they pressed well and their first goal came less than a minute into the half. Dilaxsika's high press and dispossession of the Székely Land centre back reflected the fitness the Tamil Eelam team had displayed. Dilaxsika now through on goal calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner bringing the game level.

Though the attacking prowess wasn't the only thing on show. Less than two minutes later, courageous defending by captain Mathini putting her body on the line stopped an opportunity on goal from a Székely Land striker.

 Mathini went to receive treatment on the side and Székely Land capitalised on the pause in play with Tamil Eelam being player down. A misplaced goal kick led to Tamil Eelam being disposed and Székely Land's lofted shot found its way into the net. Tamil Eelam were back to square one. Mathini now back on the pitch Székely Land attempted to turn up the pressure, three fouls were given against them with two of their players booked for late challenges. The attempt to rattle the Tamil Eelam team did not phase them, maintaining possession and building up play from the back Tamil Eelam were able to utilise Kopika on the wing, her dribbling flare had been causing problems for the Székely right back. 

Tamil Eelam continued to transition play well though they could not find the opportunity in the final third. However, they pressed on still chasing an equaliser. Székely now leading had decided to absorb the pressure from Tamil Eelam, their attempts to counter-attack were closed down by the Eela Tamil midfielders and defence.  The overwhelming pressure from  Tamil Eelam had begun to frustrate the Székely land players with four bookings before the 78-minute. However, that frustration was about to turn to despair.

Tamil Eelam won possession with a brilliant tackle from Maya, who began the counter. She then found Dilaxshika, holding up play allowing her wingers to be brought into play, she fed the ball back to the midfield who then pushed it out wide to Rahavi on the left. She did brilliantly to find number the 11 Briththeka who on her first touch cut the Szekely defence in half with a sensational pass for Dilaxshika to pick up.  The number 9 now through on goal was composed, as the Székely keeper came out to close her down, Dilaxshika distinct with her pink boots let the ball run before calmly cutting the ball onto her right foot, dropping the keeper to then slot it into the open goal. Tamil Eelam had equalised in the 79th minute. 

The play was open in the minutes that followed, with a foul being given against Tamil Eelam outside the edge of the box. A danger zone, as the Szekely number 4 who had scored earlier from a set piece, readied herself to take the kick, Tamil Eelam formed a wall of three. As she shot the Tamil Eelam wall jumped high with Briththeka making the crucial block. Though the pressure was not over as a corner had been given, the kick was taken quickly but keeper Sara was ready to collect.

Tamil Eelam made their final sub in the 88th minute. They had absorbed pressure from Szekely who were unable to break out of the right-hand side, possession was turned over with Tamil Eelam switching it across the field. As the clock ticked past 90 both teams still pushed on to find a winner, Though Tamil Eelam were determined. Rahavi found Dilaxshika with a brilliant pass who was then through on goal but the flag was raised and offside was given, though there wasn't much time for protest as the referee blew the whistle for full-time mere seconds later.
