The Tamil Eelam football team have been crowned champions at the inaugural CONIFA Asia Cup held in Lisbon.

The Asia Cup which was held in Lisbon between 3 August - 8 August saw fierce competition between members of CONFIA Asia. The tournament was a crucial step for teams to guarantee qualification to the CONIFA World Cup to be held in 2024 in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Tamil Eelam Football Association participated alongside Hmong Football Federation and Tibet.

The Tamil Eelam Football Association (TEFA) was created by the Global Tamil Youth League (GTYL) in April 2012. TEFA is currently a member of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations and currently manages both Men and Women's National Football teams of Tamil Eelam. In early 2012 youth groups across the globe such as the Tamil Youth Organisation (TYO) and the Candian Tamil Youth Alliance (CTYA) joined together as the Global Tamil Youth League (GTYL) to attend the 2nd annual Global Tamil Youth Conference. At this conference the GTYL proposed and created the Tamil Eelam Football Association, re-establishing the Tamil Eelam National team from 2003.

Tamil Eelam's squad consisted of 26 players drawn from across the diaspora. Tamil Eelam's performance was clinical, going undefeated throughout the whole tournament to secure victory against Hmong FF in the final with a comfortable 3-1 win.

The team has written history and will look to build upon the momentum in preparation for the CONIFA World Cup in 2024.
