Philippines power sharing deal hailed

A power sharing deal between the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the government of Philippines has been signed in Malaysia, raising hopes that the decades-long conflict in the region may reach a resolution.

The deal will see an autonomous southern region created with significant powers devolved to the area, with the annex stating there would be “delineation and sharing of power between the central government and the Bangsamoro (Filipino Muslim) government”.

The annex is one of four preliminary annexes that are to be signed, ahead of a full peace deal. Two other annexes, concerning transition and sharing of revenues have been signed earlier this year.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino hailed the deal, but stated “contentious” issues remain, particularly that of the final annex - the proposed disarming of the 12,000-strong MILF.

Teresita Deles, the head of the government peace panel, added,

“The signing of the Annex on Power Sharing ensures the achievement of a genuine and viable autonomy for the Bangsamoro”.

However other separatists organisations, particularly the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) have not signed the deal.
