Nestle vans play messages from Sri Lanka’s army commander

Nestle has sponsored large vans to play messages from the commander of Sri Lanka’s army, and war criminal, Shavendra Silva.

The large vans travelled throughout the Poonakari region from the 7- 13 November and were accompanied by troops from Sri Lanka’s infamous 66 infantry division. On large LED screens, Shavendra Silva was shown airing a COVID-19 awareness campaign.

The 66 division’s Major General, Jagath Kodithuwakku, and the commander from the security forces in Kilinochchi, General Sampath Kotuwegoda also participated in the event. Sri Lankan soldiers handed out Maggi noodles packs to civilians who came to the van.

Militarisation remains rampant across the Tamil homeland. This recent display is an example of the Sri Lankan military’s continued intrusion into civilian life in the region.

Tamil civil society groups and politicians have repeatedly called for the military to withdraw from civilian activities and for the demilitarisation of the region.
