Modi congratulates Rajapaksa even before final results amidst SLPP landslide

Indian prime minister Narenda Modi called Sri Lankan prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier today to congratulate him on an “impressive electoral performance by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party,” according to an official Indian statement.

The call to Rajapaksa came even before the final results have been announced, with the Sinhala nationalist party dominating polls in the south.

“Recalling their cordial and fruitful previous interactions, the two leaders reiterated their shared commitment to strengthen the age-old and multi-dimensional India-Sri Lanka relationship,” continued the statement. “They stressed the significance of early progress in all spheres of bilateral cooperation.”

Final counts are still taking place across the island with the SLPP within reach of a two-thirds majority.
