The Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna's (SLPP) have swept polls across the South on their Sinhala nationalist platform as predicted, whilst the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) lost seats in the North-East, with final results just announced in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections.
As results were still being declared Indian prime minister Narendra Modi called Mahinda Rajapaksa to congratulate him on the polls, stating the clan had put in an “impressive electoral performance” according to an official press release.
“Thank you PM @narendramodi for your congratulatory phone call,” tweeted Rajapaksa earlier. “With the strong support of the people of #SriLanka, I look forward to working with you closely to further enhance the long-standing cooperation between our two countries. Sri Lanka & India are friends & relations.”
Across the North-East, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) still remains the major party but has lost a significant amount of its vote share, with reports that the party may suffer some high profile losses.

The United National Party (UNP) meanwhile, has captured less than 3% of the island's vote share so far and is faring dismally. Sajith Premadasa's Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) looks set to be the party of opposition.
