Mahinda Rajapaksa meets with TNA leader

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa met with the leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Sampanthan at his residence, where the two discussed the issues faced by Tamils on the island.

Rajapaksa, who oversaw the genocidal conflict against Tamils on the island, reassured Sampanthan that they would reach an amicable solution. In the immediate aftermath of the armed conflict, Rajapaksa had vowed to go beyond the 13th amendment, which introduced provincial councils, however, this never materialised.

Rajapaksa maintained that his party, the SLPP, would attend a three-day all-party conference, where they would further discuss the concerns of Tamil political parties.

The TNA has met with Sri Lanka’s current President Ranil Wickremesinghe, where they reportedly reached an agreement on the release of Tamil political prisoners and land occupied by the Sri Lankan military.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
