Maaveerar remembered at Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam

Fallen Tamil fighters were commemorated at Kanagapuram Thuyilum Illam over the weekend before locals began preparing the area for Maaveerar Naal.

The parents of fallen cadres, activists and political representatives including Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Sivagnanam Shritharan paid tribute to the Maaveerar by lighting a lamp and laying flowers before beginning the clearing process.

Kanagapuram, a short distance from Kilinochchi town was one of the largest Thuyilum Illams built and maintained by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the North-East.

Ahead of the Maaveerar Naal the Thuyilum Illams across the Tamil homeland are being cleaned.

Maaveerar Naal, or Great Heroes Day which falls on November 27, is a day observed in remembrance of the war heroes who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil struggle for freedom.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
