Uduthurai Thuyilum Illam clearing begins in preparation for Maaveerar Naal

Cleaning was underway at Uduthurai Thuyilum Illam this morning as the Tamil nation prepare to mark Maaveerar Naal later this month.

The tombstones of fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres, which were destroyed by the Sri Lankan army, were placed together to form a large monument in memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil struggle for liberation.

Families of fallen LTTE cadres, activists and politicians present also paid tribute to the Maaveerar by lighting a flame and laying flowers at the monument.

Thuyilum Illams – Resting Places – were constructed by the LTTE for their fighters. Thuyilum Illams across the Tamil homeland were destroyed both during the armed conflict and later bulldozed over by the Sri Lankan state following the Tamil genocide in 2009.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
