Island-wide curfew imposed in Sri Lanka over coronavirus

The Sri Lankan government announced it will be imposing an island-wide curfew from tonight, as it looks to tackle the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

The curfew will come into effect from 6pm this evening until 6am on March 23. Areas such as Puttalam and Chilaw are already under police curfew.

The Road Development Authority announced that the expressways will be closed from 4pm today and train services are to be suspended due to the island-wide curfew.

“This is not the usual type of curfews we have where you are asked not to travel on the road but can go the next house,” Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana said on Thursday. “You cannot even go to your neighbour’s house."
