Former Sri Lankan cricket captain and parliamentarian charged over corruption

Sri Lanka’s former cricket captain and former deputy minister Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) with two counts of breaching the Anti-Corruption Code.

Jayasuriya is accused of failing to co-operate with the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit investigation on the island and of obstructing the investigation by "concealing, tampering with or destroying evidence".

Following his retirement from cricket, Jayasuriya went on to run for office with the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) of Mahinda Rajapaksa, before becoming the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development under the government of Maithripala Sirisena. In 2015, he then pledged his support for the United National Party (UNP).

"There are other names that are going to come out," former England cricket captain and sports commentator Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports. "This is going to be just the tip of the iceberg.

"It is a huge story, he is one of the iconic figures - if not only Sri Lanka cricket but also world cricket. A former captain, a great player of world cricket, former chairman of selectors.

"In a funny sort of way I am pleased it has come out because there have been so many rumours… I've been in commentary boxes with Sri Lankan and ex-Sri Lankan players and there are so many rumours about big names coming out."
