Chinese workers injured after brawl with Sri Lankans

At least 4 Chinese workers in Sri Lanka have been hospitalised following a clash with Sri Lankan workers in Ambalanthota on Sunday.

The workers, at the construction site of a Shangri-La hotel at the south of the island, reportedly got into an argument which escalated into a brawl. Two Sri Lankans were also injured.

A vast number of Chinese workers are in Sri Lanka, working on projects across the island, including the controversial Port City project in Colombo, which was recently given the all clear by the Sri Lankan government.

In 2013 it was estimated that China’s then 42 projects employed more than 1,700 Chinese workers.

The Policy Research Group stated that the number also included a large number of Chinese prisoners, noting that in the Hambantota Port project over 400 Chinese prisoners were brought to work as semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
