Canadian Prime Minister recognises success of Tamil community on Thai Pongal

Canada’s prime minister Justice Trudeau recognised the “many contributions Tamil Canadians have made to the success and prosperity of our country,” as he marked Thai Pongal this week.

“This week, the Tamil community in Canada and around the world will celebrate Thai Pongal, the four-day harvest festival,”said a statement from the prime minister’s office.

“As we mark the end of the harvest season and the start of the New Year, we also celebrate Tamil Heritage Month. During this special time, we recognize the many contributions Tamil Canadians have made to the success and prosperity of our country.”

“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating Thai Pongal a joyful festival.”

His comments come as several other political leaders across the country hailed the Tamil diaspora in Canada, as they marked Tamil Heritage Month this January.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
