African Union urges UK to end “colonial administration” of Chagos Island

<p>The African Union has urged the UK to bring an end to its “continued colonial administration” of the Chagos Islands following a ruling at the International Criminal Court against UK’s rule over the Chagos islands.</p> <p>The Chagos islands are in a territorial dispute between Mauritius and the UK, as the former argues that the archipelago was unlawfully taken into the territory of the UK in 1965, shortly before Mauritius gained independence three years later.&nbsp;</p> <p>In May 2019, the UN passed a non-binding resolution calling on the UK to "withdraw its colonial administration” within 6 months, which expired last Friday.</p> <p>The island remains of strategic importance to the UK and US as they use Diego Garcia, the largest of the isles, as a joint military base.</p> <p>Read Al Jazeera's reporting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/11/uk-urged-colonial-administration…">here</a>.</p>
