The Sri Lankan president, Maithripala Sirisena said the government would dissolved in August, and a general election called, ensuring a new government was in place by September, reported Sri Lankan newspapers. (See here and here).
Mr Sirisena, who met with heads of media institutions on Monday, said that a constitutional council would be appointed before the dissolution of parliament took place.
A fresh election within 100 days of taking office and the abolition of the executive presidency were pledged by the new government when it came to power in January. One hundred days ended last month.
“There are some pending issues to be addressed by the current Parliament. Once those issues are addressed, Parliament will be dissolved and elections will be held. We should have a new Parliament by September,” Mr Sirisena was quoted by the Sunday Leader as saying.
