Vijay urges Modi to intervene over detained fishermen in Sri Lanka

Tami Nadu chief Minister and Prime minister

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps to secure the release of Indian fishermen currently detained in Sri Lanka.

The appeal was made during a meeting held today between the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Indian Prime Minister, where concerns over the continued arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy were raised.

During the discussions, the Chief Minister warned that the arrest and alleged harassment of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy had reached an alarming level.

He noted that 12 separate incidents involving the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen had already been recorded in 2026. According to the figures presented, 58 fishermen are currently being held in Sri Lankan custody, while 266 fishing boats have been seized.

In light of the escalating situation, the Chief Minister called on the Indian government to exert pressure on Sri Lanka to ensure the immediate release of the detained fishermen, as well as the return of their confiscated boats.
