Tamil Genocide Remembrance commemorated in Mannar with Mullivaikkal kanji distribution

A Tamil genocide remembrance event was held in Nanattan, Mannar on Thursday (14 May), marking the third day of commemorations taking place across the Tamil homeland ahead of Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

The event was organised by the Mannar branch of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and took place at approximately 10:30 a.m. in the Nanattan area.

As part of the remembrance observance, Mullivaikkal kanji was prepared and distributed to members of the public, travellers and local residents. The symbolic porridge, associated with the final months of the armed conflict in Mullivaikkal in 2009, has become a powerful expression of collective memory and mourning across the North-East.

Religious leaders, members of the Mannar District ITAK branch, activists and local residents participated in the event, paying tribute to the tens of thousands of Tamils killed during the genocide.

Across the Tamil homeland and diaspora, Tamil genocide remembrance events continue to be held annually in memory of those who were massacred during the final stages of the armed conflict.

The preparation and sharing of Mullivaikkal kanji has, in recent years, emerged as a central act of remembrance during Tamil Genocide Remembrance week, symbolising both the extreme humanitarian suffering endured by Tamil civilians and the resilience of collective memory.
