Commemorations marking the second day of Tamil Genocide Remembrance Week were held in the North-East on Wednesday (May 13), with events taking place in both Batticaloa and Jaffna.
In Batticaloa, a remembrance event was organised at the Mahiladitheevu massacre memorial in Kokkaddichcholai under the arrangement of the Homeland Task Force.

The event formed part of the ongoing “Mullivaikkal Kanji Week”, a series of memorial observances intended to honour those killed during the armed conflict and to reflect on the suffering endured by Tamils during the 2009 Mullivaikkal genocide.
The commemoration was coordinated by Homeland Task Force coordinator Iruthayam Selvakumar. Members of the organisation and local residents took part in the event.

As part of the observance, “Mullivaikkal Kanji” was prepared and distributed to attendees.Tributes were also paid to those killed during the Magiladitheevu massacre, with memorial flames lit at the monument and floral respects offered.
Meanwhile, in Jaffna, commemorations were held in Allaipiddy. Prayers and tributes were conducted in memory of those killed at Mullivaikkal, while Mullivaikkal Kanji was distributed among attendees.

During the event, the parish priest of Allaipiddy lit a common memorial flame in remembrance of those who were killed in Mullivaikkal in 2009. Floral tributes were also offered.

Additional homage was paid to victims of the Allaipiddy massacre at the Allaipiddy cemetery, where candles were lit and flowers placed in remembrance of those killed.

The annual Mullivaikkal remembrance events continue to be observed across the Tamil homeland in the lead-up to May 18, which is marked as 'Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day'.
