A delegation led by MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has travelled to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, seeking Indian support to advance a federal constitutional solution for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
Speaking on the purpose of the visit, MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam stated that the Government of Sri Lanka is actively engaged in efforts to impose a unitary constitutional structure, presenting it as a permanent political solution for the Tamil people.
In this context, he stressed that the international community must apply pressure to prevent such a move and instead advance a federal constitutional arrangement founded on the recognition of the Tamil nation’s sovereign right to self-determination as a political solution for the Tamil people.
He further emphasised that, as a regional power, the Government of India must exert pressure on Sri Lanka, and that there is an urgent need for political leaders in Tamil Nadu to speak out in support of a federal constitutional structure.
The delegation led by Tamil National People’s Front MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam includes the party’s Secretary Selvarasa Gajendran, National Organiser T. Suresh, Media Spokesperson Attorney-at-Law K. Sugash, Propaganda Secretary Attorney-at-Law N. Kandeepan, and P. Aingaranesan of the Tamil National Green Movement.
The delegation has travelled to Chennai and will be engaging in meetings with political leaders in Tamil Nadu, including the Chief Minister M.K Stalin this week.
