‘Tamil Eelam is not ordinary’ - Kovai Kamala praises Prabhakaran and sings of liberation

Famed devotional singer Kovai Kamala paid tribute to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran, in a now viral interview broadcast last month.

In an interview with devotional singer Kovai Kamala, broadcast by IBC Bakthi on the Thadam2.0 channel last month, offered a deeply emotional reflection on faith, music, and the Tamil struggle for liberation, including explicit tributes to Tamil Eelam, Veluppillai Prabhakaran, and fallen fighters of the Tamil liberation struggle.

During the conversation, the interviewer asked Kamala about her contribution to the Tamil Eelam struggle through her music. 

In response, she sang a portion of one of her most famous liberation songs - “Raja Gopuram Engal Thalaivan (Majestic Gopuram, Our Leader)”, a reference to Veluppillai Pirabhakaran.

Her recital of the song, which moved both her and the interview to visible tears, sings of a future harvest of freedom for both women and the land.

“Tamil Eelam is not ordinary,” she repeated, sharing insight into her visit to the Tamil homeland.

Renowned for her soul-stirring Hindu devotional songs, Kovai Kamala spoke at length about her spiritual journey and her close connection with Lord Murugan and his devotees. The interview explored how her faith and music have intertwined over decades, shaping songs that draw strength from devotion while also carrying political and historical meaning for Tamils.
