Members of the Tamil Eelam People’s Association for International Justice (TEPAIJ) staged a protest outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in London on Thursday, condemning Colombo’s continued denial of atrocities and calling for an internationally supervised referendum on Tamil Eelam.
The demonstration, held on 6 November, drew activists and members of the Tamil diaspora who accused the Sri Lankan government of engaging in “international deception” to evade accountability for genocide, crimes against humanity, and decades of systematic human rights violations committed against the Tamil nation.
Participants carried placards and banners demanding justice for the tens of thousands of Tamils killed during the armed conflict and its aftermath, and urged the international community to recognise the ongoing repression under the Sinhala-dominated state.
Protesters reiterated that meaningful accountability remains impossible within Sri Lanka’s domestic systems, pointing to repeated failures of internal mechanisms and the government’s refusal to cooperate with international investigations.
A key demand of the demonstration was the repeal of the 6th Amendment of the Sri Lankan Constitution, which criminalises advocacy for a separate state and has long been used to suppress Tamil political expression. The British Tamil activists argued that the amendment violates fundamental democratic rights and blocks the Tamil nation from pursuing a peaceful, democratic resolution to the national question.
TEPAIJ organisers insisted that only an internationally mediated and monitored referendum could determine the political aspirations of the Tamil nation.
