Exhibition about Mullivaikkal genocide

An exhibition titled 'Ninaivayutham' - memory weapon -  is taking place this week at the University of Jaffna to commemorate the genocide that was perpetrated by the Sri Lankan state in 2009.

The exhibition includes photographs, publications and infographics illustrating the horrors of the violence and oppression Tamils in the North-East have been subjected to by the Sri Lankan state, including the genocide at Mullivaikkal.

In the final months of the armed conflict, Tamils were subjected to heavy bombardment by Sri Lanka's military as they were trapped in government designated No Fire Zones. 169,796 Tamils were killed or unaccounted for and presumed dead, as a result of Sri Lanka's shelling of the safe zones.

The University of Jaffna Students' Union set up the exhibition as a means to educate the younger Tamil generation about the genocide.

The exhibition will be running at University of Jaffna until May 18.

Commemoration events are taking place across the homeland and the diaspora in the lead up to May 18, also known as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.
