Aid from Tamil Nadu arrives in Vavuniya as supply of essential items runs dry

Food supplies from Tamil Nadu arrived in Vavuniya yesterday as the island’s economic turmoil continues.

The supplies will be distributed to families across Vavuniya who have been struggling due to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis. Sri Lanka’s shortage of foreign reserves and soaring inflation has created a shortage of essential items including fuel, food and medicines.

Last month, the Tamil Nadu Assembly showed unanimous support to pass a resolution that would urge the Union government to send aid to Sri Lanka in order to combat the ongoing economic crisis.

Earlier this week, J Krishnamoorthy, Sri Lanka’s food commissioner, told the Financial Times that the government had “just started the process” of applying for food assistance from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation to help deal with the food shortage.
