Tamil Nadu health minister MA Subramanian has reportedly confirmed that Tamil Nadu will be sending Rs 8.87 crore worth of medicines to Sri Lanka to aid with the island’s ongoing economic crisis.
On Sunday Subramanian inspected the drug warehouse located in Chennai with the essential medicines that are to be sent to Sri Lanka.
Subramanian stated that for the first phase of aid Tamil Nadu will send medicines worth Rs 8.87 crore.
He continued “after analyzing the immediate requirement for Sri Lanka, we have shortlisted 53 varieties of medicine.”
Last month the Tamil Nadu government unanimously passed a resolution to send 137 types of medicine worth Rs 28 crore to the island.
The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has resulted in shortages and price hikes of essential medicines and medical supplies. Healthcare workers have warned of an imminent disaster if the issue is not addressed urgently.
Tamil Nadu will be the first State in India to send medical aid to Sri Lanka. Subramanian has stated that the Union government would make the decision regarding which part of the island the medicine will be sent to.
