TNA MP denounces growing Chinese presence in the Tamil homeland

Shritharan Sivagnanam, a parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), denounced the growing presence of China in the Tamil homeland in light of the recent visit made by the Chinese Ambassador to Jaffna and Mannar.

In remarks made to the press, Sivagnanam warned that the Tamil people might soon protest against China and he suggested that the Sri Lankan government is deliberately encouraging Chinese activities in order to overshadow India’s influence in the island, particularly in the Tamil areas.

Sivagnanam described China’s economic enterprises in the North-East as a cover for Colombo’s attempt to snuff out Tamil self-determination “in addition to the efforts already being taken to appropriate Tamil lands by deploying the police, navy, army and various other state departments.”

He further questioned whether China’s ideology in the island is governed by communism or is an attempt to subjugate the Tamils. “We will never accept Chinese activities (in our homeland),” Sivagnanam stated and warned that the time has come for the Tamil people to protest against Beijing.

His statement comes less than a week after the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka made a highly publicised visit to Jaffna and Mannar.
