‘Mentally ill’ Tamil man’s body recovered from a well in Vavuniya

The body of a man, who was quarantined in his home in Vavuniya, was recovered from a well last Tuesday.

Ganesan Ilankumaran, and his family were in isolation, due to the current COVID-19 measures in effect, when he went missing. His family had been searching for him until the body was discovered the next day. Police rushed to the place of the incident and are conducting investigations.

The victim reportedly suffered from a mental illness. Social isolation and quarantine throughout the pandemic has had detrimental impact on the  physical and mental health of people, with the strict enforcement of the travel ban pushing people to the brink of starvation and suicide.

In the North-East, the COVID-19 response has seen increased incidents of intimidation, surveillance and harassment of Tamils further exacerbating mental health disorders that are prominent among victims of the war.
