Sri Lankan police enter TNPF offices in Jaffna to stop Maaveerar Naal commemorations

A crowd of Sri Lankan policemen entered the Tamil National People's Front office in Kokkuvil, Jaffna, in an attempt to bar Maaveerar Naal commemorations.

This follows a military-led crackdown on commemorations across the North-East during which Sri Lanka’s military has blocked access to the destroyed cemeteries of tens of thousands of Tamil fighters. Sri Lanka’s security forces have also launched raids and arrests across the North-East.

Locals who have lit candles to remember their loved ones have reported to police stations, according to journalists on the ground.

In Jaffna, a priest who had set up for a remembrance event at the Bishop of Jaffna’s home was arrested.
