US embassy opens school in Trincomalee

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alaina B. Teplitz has opened a new school, the Khoonethivu Navalar school, in Sampur, Trincomalee, with the assistance of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education.

The new facility includes a two-story classroom building with 8 classrooms, a rainwater harvesting system and washrooms for both men and women, as well as teachers and those with disabilities. The building will also serve as an emergency shelter for up to 400 evacuees from the local community which is especially beneficial as the region is vulnerable to natural disasters.

The US Embassy in Sri Lanka further reported that in the past 9 years, the US has supported the construction of 14 schools and invested over $5.8 million.

The opening of this new school comes as the US and Sri Lanka continue to foster a close relationship between the two governments.

Elsewhere on the island, the Sri Lanka military seized schools and educational establishments in the Northern Province earlier this year, to quietly convert into Quarantine Centres (QC’s) for returning navy personnel from the south at risk of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
